Ordering a wedding cake can feel overwhelming. Between Pinterest inspiration, social media trends and endless supplier advice, it's easy to spend time and money on things that may not actually improve your wedding day experience.

At My Baker, we believe in helping couples focus on what genuinely matters.

Some elements are worth prioritising, while others are simply nice-to-haves - or even worse, an expensive distraction. This guide breaks down the common wedding cake considerations and we’ve given our view on how essential they really are.

1. Cake Tasting Samples

Necessity Rating: 6/10

One of the most common questions couples ask is whether they need to order cake samples before booking.

The honest answer is: it depends.

A wedding cake should taste every bit as good as it looks. At My Baker, we're confident in delivering both. If you choose to order samples, we'll ensure that the same baker who prepares your tasting samples will also create your wedding cake, giving you complete consistency from first bite to final delivery.

However, samples aren't always essential. If you're working to a tight budget, reading reviews can often provide enough reassurance to make an informed decision.

Samples are helpful but for many couples, they're a useful extra rather than an absolute necessity.

2. Face-to-Face Consultations

Necessity Rating: 2/10

This might be a controversial opinion, but it's a hill we're willing to die on.

We completely understand why couples think they need an in-person consultation. It feels like the traditional thing to do besides sitting down over a coffee to talk through your wedding sounds lovely.

But is it necessary? We don't think so.

Creating an incredible wedding cake comes down to understanding your style, your venue, your guest numbers, your budget and your vision, not how many hours we've spent chatting in person. With photos, sketches, emails and a quick phone or video call if needed, we can gather everything required to design and bake an amazing cake.

We often joke that we can make you an unforgettable wedding cake without needing to become godparents to your future children!

Face-to-face consultations can be a nice experience if you enjoy them, but for most couples they're simply another appointment to fit into an already packed wedding planning schedule. We'd rather spend our time perfecting your cake than asking you to spend an afternoon travelling to meet us.

3. Mood Boards (from your Baker)

Necessity Rating: 1/10

Don’t get us wrong. Mood boards are useful for the wedding in general, but most couples come to us with the aesthetic for their wedding pretty much worked out. .

By the time you're thinking about your wedding cake, you'll usually already have a clear creative direction. Whether you're working with a wedding planner, stylist or simply have your own vision, the colour palette, flowers, stationery and overall aesthetic have often already been decided.

Our job isn't to reinvent your wedding style, it's to create a cake that fits seamlessly into it.

If you have inspiration images, your invitation suite, floral choices or a venue colour scheme, we'll happily incorporate those details into the design. Keep it simple. Tell us the look you're aiming for and we'll take it from there.

Even on our set designs, we’ll change the colour scheme for you, normally at no extra cost.

4. Set Design vs Bespoke Design

Necessity Rating: 5/10

This one comes down almost entirely to your budget.

If you have room in your budget and want something completely unique, a bespoke cake allows us to create a one-of-a-kind design tailored specifically to your wedding.

However, bespoke doesn't automatically mean better.

We've spent years developing a collection of pre-designed cakes that are timeless, elegant and proven to work beautifully at weddings. Choosing one of these designs can save both time and money while still giving you a stunning centrepiece.

If your priority is making every detail entirely personal, bespoke is a great option. But if you'd rather invest that budget elsewhere, our signature collection offers exceptional value without compromising on style.

The cake your guests remember most isn't necessarily the one that was designed from scratch, it's the one that looks beautiful and tastes incredible.

5. Delivery & Timing Certainty

Necessity Rating: 10/10

If there's one thing you shouldn't compromise on, it's knowing your cake will arrive safely, on time and looking exactly as it should.

The most beautiful wedding cake in the world is no good if it's damaged in transit or arrives late.

At My Baker, reliability is every bit as important as design. From the moment you place your order, we'll coordinate with you, your wedding planner or your venue to make sure everything runs smoothly. We confirm delivery times, venue access, setup requirements and any other logistics before the big day.

Your cake is hand-delivered by the baker who made it or a dedicated cake courier. That means the person transporting your cake knows exactly how it should be handled and how it should be presented.

Once we arrive, we'll position and set up your cake exactly as planned. Setup is included as standard, so there's nothing for you, your venue or your family to worry about.

Whether it's sunshine, wind or the inevitable British rain, we'll make sure your cake is delivered safely and professionally, leaving you free to enjoy your wedding day with complete peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

If you ask us, the things that matter most are simple: a cake that looks beautiful, tastes incredible, arrives on time and is made by a baker you can trust. Everything else whether that's mood boards, in-person consultations or endless design meetings is entirely optional.

Every couple is different and there's no right or wrong way to order a wedding cake. If sampling every flavour and creating a bespoke design is part of the experience you want, we're all for it. Equally, if you'd rather keep things straightforward and let an experienced baker guide the process, that's absolutely fine too.

At My Baker, we focus on making the process as simple and stress-free as possible so you can enjoy your wedding day.
