February was an exciting month at the MY BAKER HQ. We received an order from Time Inc. for an elaborate wedding cake for British TV sitcom Benidorm. The cake itself was featured as part of the 10-year anniversary of the BAFTA nominated series. Characters Joyce and Monty tied the knot in a special wedding episode, which aired on Wednesday.

The four-tiered sandcastle inspired creation was made by our cake artist Daisy B. ‘’I was thrilled to get the order. It is such a great show and I love watching it. It felt great to be able to contribute to such a milestone celebration of 10 years’’, said Daisy.

“At first I thought it was a real sandcastle. I didn’t realise it was edible and it’s very delicious!”

We caught up with Daisy and asked her a few questions about the cake and her career as one of London’s top bakers.

How long did the Benidorm cake take to make?

It took me 20 hours in total, the chocolate model figurines of Joyce and Monty took 2 hours each. Normally, wedding cakes take much longer but because only the bottom tier was edible, this reduced the baking time considerably.

What was the sand made out of?

Hundreds of McVitie’s digestive biscuits.

When did you start baking?

As a child, I loved cake and spent a lot of my school holidays making and selling little cakes and lemonade with my mother and grandmother on our front door step to neighbours and passers-by. At the age of 27, I completed my PME masters in sugar craft. A few years later, I decided to leave my career as an actress and embark on a new journey as an artisan baker.

Where do you get your ‘cakespiration’ from?

Everywhere! From art and fashion to furniture and architecture. Recently, I have taken a keen interest in using Children's TV shows as inspiration for my cakes. My friends and family often hear me saying ‘ooh that would make a great cake!’

What’s the best thing about making cakes?

Honestly, it’s the life long memories I create. There is such a stigma that cakes that look good, don’t taste good. I pride myself on breaking that mould!

It seems like this was the perfect cake brief for former actress Daisy B. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks, MY BAKER will be making another cake appearance on TV!
